Gerd Untermann
From my earliest childhood I was surrounded by a family of accomplished painters, sculptors, architects and builders. What I learned from them above all was this: “Get your ego out of the way; try to be honest with yourself in order to realize your inspiration.”
I like to think of myself as a storyteller, only instead of words I use the warmth and grain of the various woods to tell my stories in sculptures.
As I go about my daily life, I see a face, a gesture, certain body language, which evokes an image, and I struggle to give it shape.
My work is not about me; it is about you, the beholder, whom I beg to find a moment of stillness, and touch the work as you contemplate it.
